Rhinoplasty

This operation is to change what you do not like about your nose.

David L Martin FRCS Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon

The most common reason patients come to see me requesting a rhinoplasty is to get rid of a hump on the nose.

Reasons patients come to see me:

  • A hump on the nose
  • The nose is too big
  • The tip of the nose is bulky
  • The nose is not straight.

You must be able to tell me what you do not like about your nose. Spend some time looking in the mirror before your consultation and make a list of the things you don't like. This will make it much easier to discuss what we can do to improve the shape of your nose.

A picture of a nose you like can be helpful, but it may not be possible to make your nose look like someone elses.

A rhinoplasty operation needs to be tailored to correct the particular aspects of your nose that you don't like.

Your rhinoplasty operation will be unique for you

This is why we need to discuss very carefully what it is you don't like about your nose and how we can change it to suit you.

I will then advise you how any change in one particular part of your nose might affect another part. For example if you have a bump on your nose which is particularly evident on the side view, I might point out to you that if we get rid of a hump the tip might look very bulky and too big, and suggest we should also refine the tip.

The objective of the surgery is to make your nose fit your face and not be the dominant part of your face.

The operation:

  • Is done under general anaesthetic
  • Takes about one hour to do
  • When you wake up from the anaesthetic you will have a splint on your nose.

The operation takes about an hour to do and it is done under general anaesthetic. When you wake up you will have a splint on your nose to protect your nose and keep things in the right position. It does not appear to be a painful operation for most patients. I will see you a week after your operation to take off the splint. At that time you will have a good idea of the improvement in your nose that you need to remember that there will still be some swelling so you will not be looking at the final shape. It takes a few months for the swelling to settle down.

Be aware that you are likely to get black eyes in the first 24 to 48 hours, this is particularly true if you have had the nasal bones repositioned.

"I used to hate having my picture taken from the side."
